The Guild’s seminars are a feast for Soul. They are an oasis amidst the rush of daily life, a time to stop and savor deeper truths, those truths that whisper at the edges of our awareness, and promise a more meaningful life if we will but slow down and pay attention.
I love the way our seminars integrate the whole person, bringing mind, heart, body and soul into respectful conversation with each other, nourishing the archetypal journey of individuation. No special knowledge is required to participate in a Guild seminar. Literally come as you are, and only take the food that tastes right to the beautiful and magnificent Self you are always becoming. Guild seminars are a form of deep education and transformational learning, an adventure into Psyche.
The Guild has been my spiritual home since 1975, when I experienced my first seminar, the psychological and historical approach to the life and teachings of the figure of Jesus, known as “Basic Records.” This seminar offers a process to think about Jesus outside of the Christian box, and thrusts you into engaging the most important questions and concerns of your own life.
I am passionate about the depth psychology of C. G. Jung, the transformation of the Christian myth, and the importance of consciousness for our time. I believe that Psyche and Cosmos are one unified reality, and that the archetypal call of individuation is our modern myth. Each must find their own way and create their own meaning, through a vigorous engagement with the depths of Soul. As Jung reveals in the Red Book (Liber Novus), he learned there are no heroic examples any more showing us how to live. One must go one’s own way, and become one-Self.
“True personality is always a vocation…. One must obey one’s own law, as if it were a daemon whispering of new and wonderful paths.”
— C. G. Jung
I have been a psychotherapist oriented within the Jungian tradition for over twenty-five years. My private practice is in San Francisco. Visit my web site at www.halchilds.com
My education includes art history and fine arts as an undergraduate and a year at the School of the Art Institute in Chicago. I have an MDiv from Union Theological Seminary in New York City focused on integrating Jung’s depth psychology and biblical interpretation. I earned an MA in Marriage and Family Therapy from the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, California, and a PhD in interdisciplinary studies also at the Graduate Theological Union, bringing together Jung’s depth psychology, New Testament interpretation and the quest for the historical Jesus. The Society of Biblical Literature published my book, The Myth of the Historical Jesus and the Evolution of Consciousness.
I am fascinated by the intersection of Soul’s transformations through history and culture, and the impulse within the individual to learn the art of personal transformation. The Cosmos has given birth to the human in order to further the creation of meaning. We have a sacred task to fulfill our spiritual DNA here and now. I am committed to nurturing this process through the work of the Guild’s seminars and my practice as a depth psychotherapist.
